It might have been a cloudy couple of weeks however, the sunny disposition of Thuja plicata Fluffy® and Thuja o ‘Yellow Ribbon’ will lift the spirits in your garden. Both of these vibrant yellow plants offer texture and stand out color to the landscape. They get to be about 10′ tall at mature height.

Cercis canadensis is a staple in most gardens offering beautiful purple blooms in spring and eye-catching heart-shaped leaves. Chionanthus retusus has a unique shape and beautiful exfoliating bark. Its showy flowers in spring are white with a pleasant fragrance.

Euonymus al compacta have some of the most beautiful fall colors on any foliage in our fields. Hamamelis vernalis is a very hardy plant with showy flowers in early spring. Its flower show is more plentiful when sited in sunny areas.

Thuja o ‘Hetz Midget’ is a slow-growing, globe-shaped, dwarf cultivar that gets only 3-4′ tall. This is a great plant for smaller areas and keeps a tidy appearance. Acer griseum is a beautiful tree with attention-grabbing exfoliating bark. Our Myrica pensylvanica is the closest thing you will find to an instant burier. These plants are full to the ground and as thick as they come.

Pinus bungeana has magnificent gray-green exfoliating bark revealing patches of white, green, and purple interior bark with soft dark green needles. Thuja o nigra get to be about 20-30′ tall and can be used for foundations, screens, and hedges.

Viburnum lentago has beautiful white flowers in spring and an attractive blue drooping berry set in fall. Viburnum p.t. ‘Shoshoni’ is a great low hedge with attractive flowers in spring and also has a nice berry set in fall.

Nyssa sylvatica is a popular tree due to its glossy leave and eye-catching fall color. Lindera benzoin is a beautiful native plant that is adaptable to most soils and is perfect for screening or foundation planting.

Ilex x ‘Sparkleberry’ is an upright multi-stemmed form of winterberry with persistent red fruit. Ilex v. ‘Red Sprite’ is a compact selection getting to only about 4′ at maximum height with dark leave and also has persistent red fruit.

Ilex v. ‘Sunset’ has a spreading habit and is great for a dense hedge. Ilex v. ‘Afterglow’ has glossy leaves with large bright red fruit.

Pinus bungeana is a beautiful evergreen with soft textured green needles. This tree features exfoliating bark that reveals patches of white, green, and purple interior bark. Pinus strobus ‘Pendula’ is a weeping form of pine with long drooping branches. This works great as an accent plant or even a center piece for the landscape.

Platanus x acerifolia Exclamation is tolerant to difficult growing conditions including adverse soils, poor drainage, air pollution, and drought. This tree develops an attractive exfoliating bark, which peels back to expose shades of cream and white. Quercus macrocarpa has an oval habit and is tolerant of drought and direct sun making it a wonderful shade tree.

Quercus rubra has a rounded pyramidal form. This fast-growing native tree has excellent red fall color. Quercus robur fastigiata is an upright tree that is great for screening and hedges.

Taxodium distichum is a deciduous conifer with pyramidal habit and nice yellow fall color. Ulmus am ‘Valley Forge’ has a broad vase-shaped crown with arching limbs and also sports a great yellow fall color.

Picea pungens ‘Bakeri’ and Picea pungens ‘Hoopsi’ are both beautiful zone 3 blue spruce. Bakeri will finish around a mature height of 30′ and Hoopsi will finish around 25′. Both of these make a great addition to the landscape.
Eucommia ulmoides is a slow-growing, rounded tree with ascending branches and deep glossy green foliage. This is a great disease and insect resistant street tree. Diospyros virginiana is good for home landscapes, parks, golf courses, and naturalized areas. It provides a fleshy globe-shaped edible fruit pictured at the right.

Regretful Notification

Dear Friends,

We regret to inform you of the untimely passing of Gertrude Losely, wife of Edward Losely (previously deceased), the founder of our nursery. She was active in the daily operations of the office and in fact passed while at the office. Gertrude often expressed that she was glad that she was able to come in each day and be part of the nursery.

Funeral Services for Gertrude will be held Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at 10:00 AM at Zion Lutheran Church, 508 Mentor Avenue, Painesville, Ohio. Friends will be received 4:00 – 7:00 PM, Monday, October 4, 2021, at Spear Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Avenue, Painesville. The burial will be in Perry Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Gertrude’s memory be made to Our Shepherd Lutheran School or the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, c/o Zion Lutheran Church, both at 508 Mentor Avenue, Painesville, OH 44077. The family thanks you in advance for your thoughts and prayers.

Small and Mighty, Hydrangea ser Let’s Dance Arriba® is a dwarf only getting to a mature size of 3’x3′ and hardy to a zone 4A. Viburnum plic Steady Eddy® is the perfect dwarf plicatum for a smaller space, only getting to about 5’x5′ about half the size of the species. 

Taxus cus Capitata has a beautiful soft texture for a landscape backdrop or hedge line. Taxus cus Green Wave is a wonderful tight plant getting only 3’x3′ and known as generally more hardy than other similar plants at a Zone 4A.

Ilex glabra Gembox ® is a great plant to use anywhere you would put a boxwood. Gem Box has small dark green leaves with attractive red tips during the spring flush. Cornus stol Arctic Fire® has beautiful winter interest and only gets 3-5′ tall, smaller than other red twig varieties.


Juniperus chin Sea Green is great for rock gardens, foundations, or even a low hedge. Thuja o Yellow Ribbon has an amazing texture with beautiful golden foliage. This columnar variety gets to be about 10′ at mature height.
