Beauty and Function

One of our local customers planted a 200’ Hamamelis hedge and the homeowner loved it!  It was dense, looked good all summer and bloomed.

Our prediction for the most popular plant of Spring… Substitutions!

Viburnum lentago is a native that is very similar to Viburnum prunifolium in both summer and fall leaf color, flower, fruit, ultimate sizes and shade tolerance.  This is an excellent 15 to 18’ hedge or screen plant.  We have good numbers in 7, 8, and 9’ for the immediate screen.  Lindera benzoin reaches 10’ and works well in moist and shade areas.  It is a good substitute for Ilex and Fothergilla.

Pinus bungeana is a very good substitute for Pinus strobus. Its ultimate size and shape are similar with the added advantage of a very decorative multi-colored exfoliating bark.  Psuedotsuga menziesii’s name even says it makes a good sub for Tsuga canadensis.  It has the added advantage of being a very insect and disease-free evergreen tree for screens or as a stand-alone tree.

Hedge a Betula on these plants!

Betula n. ‘Heritage’ makes a great ornamental shade tree as well as an allée along a driveway with its year-round interest. Pinus bungeana has a beautifully exfoliating bark also. It makes an attractive focal tree or screen plants if planted in groups.
Cercis canadensis is a familiar plant to most people. The bright early spring flowers signify the coming of warmer weather. Magnolia virginiana’s fragrant June flowers contrast elegantly with its rich green leaves. Both make a great specimen flowering tree in a formal location or fit in nicely when blending maintained and natural areas.

Check out the Fireglow & Bombshell

Sounds like the right plants for the upcoming July 4th celebrations.  But they are great plants for the entire season!

Hydrangea pan ‘Bombshell’ #3 are very full and will be blooming soon.  These compact plants reach 2 – 3’ tall and 3 – 4’ wide.  Their compact habit leads to a spectacular flower show that covers the plant.

Morden Fireglow Rose is a low growing plant that reaches 3’ tall and wide. The flowers are fire orange on top and scarlet on the bottom of the pedals.  It is a repeat bloomer that is very disease resistant.  The leaves are clean despite all the rainy days we have experienced.

We have a very good selection of the Proven Winners® including beautiful Hydrangea pan. ‘Limelight’ #3 and Spiraea Double Play® Gold #3.  Check out the availability or talk to your Sales Rep about what other plants we have that are ready and will fill your needs.

It’s Perennial Season
