Digging conditions are great given the warm weather and not much rain. Great-looking plants are coming quickly into the yard and shipping has begun. It’s also the best time of year to lift and containerize hydrangeas. These field-grown oakleaf and Forever Pink will finish at a heavy landscape grade. They will be big and beautiful sometime in July when they will be blooming profusely!
Platanus bloodgood is widely planted in urban areas. It is a large shade tree with a broad open crown and its unique bark exfoliates to reveal patches that may be creamy white, yellow, or olive-colored. Platanus exclamation also has exfoliating bark. This variety has a strong upright pyramidal shape. This tree makes a great street tree.
Ulmus am princeton is a fast-growing elm with a symmetrical upright form and dark green foliage. Ulmus am valley forge is an extremely hardy shade tree with an upright vase-shaped habit of growth and a very dense branching structure. Both varieties have shown to be some of the best for resisting Dutch Elm Disease.
Oaks make great residential and commercial shade trees. They are also good for natural open areas.
Quercus macrocarpa is very tolerant of an urban environment. Commonly known as bur oak, it has nice dark green foliage with an oval habit and yellow fall color. Quercus rubra is a rounded pyramidal with a fast-growing habit. It has beautiful red fall color.
Quercus imbricaria has a rich glossy green foliage that turns a beautiful russet red in fall. Quercus bicolor is a moisture and drought tolerant tree. It provides yellow and orange fall color. The leaf is a similar shape to the Quercus alba.
Calycanthus floridus is a thick growing, zone 4 shrub with many stems. The fragrant reddish-brown flowers is where the common name Sweetshrub came from. It is tolerant of a wide range of soils. Lindera benzoin is another zone 4 shrub with fragrant yellow spring flowers. In Fall the bright red fruit contrasts well against the excellent yellow foliage. It will tolerate full shade but become more open in habit.
Viburnum lentago is an upright shrub with arching branches reaching 18′ is hardy in Zone 2. It has spring white flowers turning to blue fruit in the fall. Myrica pensylvanica is half the height reaching 9′ with its glossy green, aromatic foliage turns to bronze in the fall. It is tolerant of salt and poor soils. Winter shows of the silver-gray berries on the female plants.
